Causes of neck pain - HTD Health & Fitness

Neck pain, also known as cervical pain, is a common medical condition that can originate from a variety of conditions, diseases and disorders affecting the bones and tissues of the neck.

Neck pain from injury

Injuries to the neck can result in recurring or chronic pain. Contact sports, falls and motor vehicle accidents can all cause neck injuries ranging from mild to severe and debilitating. Physical therapy, medication and exercise can help with rehabilitation and pain management.

Certain conditions may develop as a result of past injuries that include neck pain as a symptom. These include degenerative disc disease, osteoarthritis and herniated cervical discs.

Pinched nerves and neck strain can result in severe pain that is usually temporary. Inflammation can be reduced with medication and applications of hot and cold compresses, helping to relieve the discomfort.

Neck pain from conditions and illnesses

Neck pain can be a residual effect of some diseases including meningitis and other infections. The conditions of fibromyalgia, which affects the muscles of the body, and polymyalgia rheumatica can also cause pain in the neck and shoulders.
