Verizon says Share Everything, and now you finally can

When Verizon finally came good on its Share Everything promise, mobile matrimony on the big red finally seemed a solid reality. If your team couldn't wait to get its sharesies on, then rest easy, as Verizon's come good on that 28th delivery date. Don't forget, you'll still have to cough up a monthly fee per device ($40 for a smartphone, $20 for a mobile hotspot etc) but you can still divvy up that $50-$100 monthly access fee, and be prepared to argue over that $15 overage charge if you choose the wrong one.

Family tragedy becomes public nightmare when death video hits Twitter

1 day

By the time police asked Internet users to remove graphic photos of a man decapitated after he jumped in front of a train, it was too late for the dead man's son. He had already seen the grisly images ? recorded by teenagers?just after the incident occurred ? when they went viral on Twitter.

You can hear the teens in the background of the shaky cellphone video, recorded Wednesday afternoon in the Netherlands, calling to each other, their adolescent voices tweaked with shock, excitement. "Here. Here is the body. Here he is," one boy shouts in Dutch. Another points to the man's severed head, a few feet away. No one is laughing.?

At least 70 students?at a nearby school ??in the?Kennemerland area of?Haarlem ??witnessed the accident or immediate aftermath, reports?Ijmuider Courant, a Netherlands news site. School officials swung into action. Within 10 minutes of the incident,?administrators?guided students away from the station and back to the school. There, counselors and members of the?Kennemerland police department spent the afternoon talking to kids and later, their parents, about what they had seen.

Yet at the same time that the school was trying to mitigate the psychological damage of the incident, a video of it was being shared among students and?making its way out onto the Internet, by way of Twitter.

This is the video the?dead man's son had already seen when?Kennemerland?police broke the news to the family. It was then that son connected the two, and realized the video was of his father.?

When the police department found out about the video, the department took to Twitter and asked the public to stop sharing the video. In Dutch, the police?asked, "Anyone who has shared pictures of the?Driehuis?train victim, remove them immediately. It is disrespectful and goes too far!"

It's a good-faith plea, made by a police department savvy in the ways of the Internet, enough to know it was already too late. It was too late 15 minutes after the video first hit Twitter, when the teenage boy who first sent it out into cyberspace deleted his original tweet. It had already been?retweeted countless times. And that is the lesson that Evy Elschot, spokesperson for the Kennemerland police department, hopes people will take away from this incident, instead of the gory details.

"The boy didn't understand the impact of what he had done," Elschot told msnbc.com in a telephone interview. Identifying him only as a teenager between the ages of 14 and 16, Elschot described him choking on tears and shaking with panic when confronted by police. "The boy said he wished he didn't do it, that he could take it back, but of course he couldn't," she said.

The boy tweeted (in Dutch), "I hate myself for what I've done," according to news site RTL.?

Elschot told msnbc.com she regrets the story receiving national attention, resulting in?the inevitable spread of a video that causes pain to a family already suffering. (Msnbc.com will not link to the video.) To protect the family's privacy, she would not share the age of the son who saw his father in the video.?

According to?Elschot, it was a very difficult decision to ask people via Twitter to delete the video.

The Kennemerland police department is very active on Twitter, using the official account to communicate with the public on such things as traffic delays, especially crowded areas at festivals, as well as finding witnesses to crimes and fielding complaints (and compliments) from the public. But by using Twitter to discuss a suicide, the Kennemerland police department went against what Elschot describes as Holland's "gentleman's agreement" to not publicize details about suicides.

Elschot said that it's in consideration for families whose?members?commit suicide,?but this practice also abides by the World Health Organization's recommendations for avoiding suicide contagion ? a phenomenon which affects those already at risk. Train suicides account for 4 to 10 percent of suicides in the Netherlands, the Journal of Affective Disorders reported in 2010.??Such a video going viral could spread contagion as well.

Elschot agrees that there's an important discussion to be had, but not about this family's tragedy.

"This really is about young people and how the world is different," she said. "When I was a kid, I might say some things in my small town without thinking, but we only had the telephone. Someone else might read your letter, and there is embarrassment for awhile, but not the oil spread of information we now have on the Internet. Kids need to understand that and their parents need to tell them."

The American Library Association website offers a variety of resources to help parents and kids navigate the Internet safely and responsibly. ?

If you are thinking about harming yourself or attempting suicide, tell someone who can help right away:

  • Call your doctor?s office.
  • Call 911 for emergency services.
  • Go to the nearest hospital emergency room.
  • Visit the website or call the toll-free, 24-hour hotline of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at?1-800-273-TALK (1-800-273-8255)?to be connected to a trained counselor at a suicide crisis center nearest you.

Ask a family member or friend to help you make these calls or take you to the hospital.

Robot beats you at rock-paper-scissors every single time

15 hrs.

When someone claims they're good at rock-paper-scissors, they're usually just trying to psyche you out so they can predict your next move. But this robot, created by the Ishikawa Oku Laboratory in Japan,?doesn't need to psyche you out, because it knows it will beat you every single time.

How can it do it? One thing it certainly doesn't do is any kind of high-level analysis of the game. It doesn't put your last sequence of moves through a complex semantic analysis and try to predict the move. It doesn't use anti-random tactics like "five scissors in a row" to throw you off. All it needs is a high-speed camera and quick reflexes.

Yes, the robot cheats. By watching the image from a camera that can determine the position of your hand every millisecond, it is aware of your move the very moment you make it. And as soon as your hand starts to form that rock, the robot is giving you some paper to wrap it up. At the very end of the video, you can see the tiny delay between the human making a move and the robot reacting ?? but it happens so fast that you wouldn't notice except when shown in slow-motion.

Doesn't seem fair, does it? But since humans can't see or react on a millisecond timescale, such a tactic would never even be considered. It's precisely because reaction time doesn't come into it that rock-paper-scissors?becomes a game of psychology or dumb luck. Similarly, our vision isn't good enough to read a person's cards in the reflection of their eyes, and we're not skillful enough with our hands to control the outcome of dice.

Robots, on the other hand, could be fast enough, far-sighted enough, or precise enough that they could do any of those things. In this case, the robot can think and react in the time it takes you to make your play. Sure it's cheating ?? but it's still quite a trick.

The lab built the setup to show how quickly a robot arm and vision system could accommodate human input; that hand could just as easily be remotely operating in a hostile area or amplifying those movements to pick up construction materials. They have many other interesting?projects along this line documented on their Web?page.

Of course, what everyone wants to know is: What happens if they build a second one and have them play each other?

Disabled : beyond appearances - St?phane Bruchez, Switzerland

The author, autodidact who likes to explore and discover the various aspects of life, accompanies people from a dozen years. This book recounts his experiences of educator who spent a year in the company of exceptional people with disabilities. ?

"Here is my story of educator who spent a great year in the company of disabled, which Romuel (cerebral palsy), Soriel (autistic) and Lea (cranio-cerebral traumatized). It is through this experience of discovery and full of love and magic that I could discover the daily life of people with disabilities and at the same time understand that many schools are sleeping in humans. What a surprise to discover that example that I could communicate with them without words and that meetings outside the body were available ... If we do not try to understand these people, they take us back to the misunderstanding and lack of knowledge we have of ourselves ... "- Stephane Bruchez" Our world of disability is seen with physical eyes, and this book will provide a vision of the mind. The lives of millions of people with disabilities will be revealed gradually in the hearts of people who read the book to the end! What the physical senses do not perceive, sense of heart recognize. See beyond the physical body, matter, or any differences is to recognize the true value of life ... "Romuel

8 Hazards That Impact The Diet Quality Of ... - Retirement Homes

There are 76 million adults age 50 and older in the United States and over 68% of them need to improve their diets! When senior adults are not eating well, they are at risk for many physical and mental problems, and they also cannot have the quality of life they want nor deserve. There are several reasons why a senior adult may not be eating well or have an optimal diet, whether they are living at home, or living in a residential facility.

Malnutrition in older adults is often hidden and increases slowly over time, especially in people who don?t seem at risk. There are studies that show residents of facilities can become malnourished even with trained dietary staff!

Malnutrition usually progresses slowly, which is why residential staff and medical personnel do not pick up on it. The examination of residents? nutritional habits is critical to maintaining health, strength and mental health. The support of a good immune system is crucial to fight off infections, to heal, for better quality and length of life. Unless, all of us address the need for optimal diets in our senior residents, unwarranted health issues can increase dramatically.

What happens if residents don?t get the nutrition they need? Their probability of getting Osteoporosis can increase, leading to bone fractures, loss of strength and muscle mass, fatigue, depression, and weight loss. Residents may become prone to depression, an inability to off infections, low red blood cell count (anemia), blood clots, bed sores, increased frailty, and even increased risk of death.

Here are some reasons why residents may not be eating well, so you can investigate why and remedy the situation:

Medical Problems that may impact a residents diet quality

1. Medical problems may be affecting a person?s ability to shop, prepare meals or feed themselves. Not feeling well can lead to a pattern of not eating well which can increase the medical problem, create new ones and continues the feeling of being unwell and denies a person the ability to live life fully.

2. Many medications have physical and/or psychological side effects that can affect eating habits but also destroy precious vitamin reserves. Medications can cause changes in taste and smell, increased fatigue, increased constipation, increased or decreased thirst and many other possible manifestations that can impact how well a person eats.

3. Decreased saliva flow and constipation are two common problems that prevent senior adults from eating well.

4. The inability to control urination for both sexes is a major issue but not discussed and options found, often enough. People tend to drink less, in order, to prevent ?wetting? and thus become dehydrated.

5. Trouble swallowing, ill-fitting dentures, mouth sores, loose teeth and other oral issues can greatly influence what a senior adult will or can eat, and yet, this problem is often overlooked by doctors, dentists, and staff.

6. Problems with digesting, either caused by an undiagnosed medical issue or occurring as a side effect of medication may cause many senior adults not to eat.

7. Even if an elderly person eats an optimal diet but there seems to be issues, it could be that their body cannot absorb the nutrients that are being consumed. Even with an optimal diet, if the body is not digesting properly or absorbing the nutrients properly, problems will occur. Often, doctors do not check a person?s ability to absorb food.

8. Hospitalization or a nursing home stay can (likely) have a big toll on a senior adult?s nutritional health. The result of such institutionalization is often loss of appetite, weakness, weight loss, and debilitation. Once a person returns home (their own, with others or at an assisted living facility), the decline in nutritional health can continue.

There are several other reasons why senior adults may not be eating optimally and they need to be assessed, along with the medical reasons in order to determine the best corrective action.

Senior adults need medical and professional service providers, caregivers, residential staff and family members to be more alert and aware of how well they are eating, so corrective actions can be taken. Senior adults who better understand the value of an optimal diet for themselves will be better able to remain healthy and to live life more fully.

Taking care of the health of residents and educating them about the importance of good nutrition, we can live and promote richer lives.

Inaugural class of Ohio Kippsters takes the next step toward college

?

When Fordham-sponsored KIPP: Journey Academy first opened in fall 2008, community leaders and school faculty knew it would not be an easy task to get the inaugural class of ?Kippsters? on the road to college. A majority of these students hailed from disadvantaged homes and previously attended low-performing schools where hard work and perseverance were far from the norm.? Their state tests results were poor and some of their parents even had a hard time believing that their children could ever succeed.

The odds were against these students, but failure was never an option for the teachers and staff at KIPP. When the inaugural class of fifth graders walked through the door only 33 percent of them passed the state reading test. Fast forward to 2011 and after just two years at KIPP 73 percent of those same students passed the seventh-grade reading test-- a gain of 40 percentage points.? After many years of hard work and going out into the community to personally invite families and parents to enroll their students in KIPP, the school?s staff and board of directors watched the first class of eighth graders graduate from KIPP earlier this month.

Sixty-four eighth graders graduated from KIPP and will matriculate to some of the area?s best high schools. Come this fall students will begin their next step toward college when the begin at high- performing schools such as Columbus Alternative, St. Charles Preparatory School, Metro High School, and Columbus School for the Girls. Congratulations to these Kippsters. They are truly an example that hard work and dedication pay off ? they are not only a symbol of hope and progress for their families, but for the Linden Park community and anyone who believes that the odds are against them.

Read more about KIPP: Journey Academy?s graduation celebration in this Columbus Dispatch op-ed by Federal Court Judge and Chair of the school?s governing board, Algenon Marbley.

    Image

?Jerusalem will be the new capital of Egypt,? was the campaign promise of Egypt?s president-elect Mohammed Morsi, who ran and won as the radical anti-Semitic Muslim Brotherhood party candidate.

One pro-Israel political consultant said after the victory that he could only hope that Egypt?s new hard core Islamist President is a liar because if he?s seriously intending on keeping his promise to change the capital from Cairo to Jerusalem, we are likely on the cusp of World War III.

During your interview General Hutchens shares the likely imminent possibilities for that region now that the Arab world has a first Islamist head of state, touching on vital topics including:

    1) Egyptian military?s 11th hour interim constitution that gives their military virtual control over the president-elect.

    2) Was the Arab Spring uprising real or contrived?

    3) What are the thoughts of Egyptians regarding this election outcome?

    4) Was this an honest count and does it truly represent the opinion of Egyptians?

    5) Immediately after the election, militants crossed Egypt into Israel firing on civilians building a border security fence, killing one Israeli before the two assailants were killed in the gun fight. What percentage of Egyptians back such incursions into Israel and how many actually want to see Israel overthrown to put Jerusalem under control of Egypt?

    6) What is the likelihood of seeing a military coup?

    7) What would it take for Israel to take pre-emptive action against Egypt now that Morsi is in power?

    8) Is there anything we left out that you would like to share?

    ABOUT REV. HUTCHENS, PhD:

James M. Hutchens is President of The JerUSAlem Connection, International and editor of the foremost Christian Zionist online magazine in America, The JerUSAlem Connection Report. www.thejerusalemconnectionreport.us. As Christian Zionists, TJCI supports the modern State of Israel as the partial fulfillment of God?s covenant promise to provide a national homeland of the Jewish people. Through its Operation Aliyah, TJCI has helped bring more than 80,000 Jews out of the former Soviet Union back to Israel. Dr. Hutchens, and the TJCI team, believe God?s future focus will be on the 6.2 million Jews in the Americas. TJCI?s Elisha Fund brings food, shelter and medicine to countless impoverished and needy Israelis ? its Operation Life for Israel provides aid and comfort to victims of terror and supports sanctity of human life endeavors throughout Israel. Taking bombed out Bus # 19 from Israel around the USA helped to confront the anti-Semitism of Islamic Jihadist terrorism. For further information on these programs please go to our ?Projects? page.

Rather than ?replacing? or ?superseding? Israel and the Jews as the covenant people of God, Dr. Hutchens sees Christians as having been ?engrafted? into the family of God and thus joint-heirs of the covenant promises of God. He believes TJCI is called to restore an appreciation of the Hebrew roots of Christianity. He seeks to encourage all believers to wait with expectation ?for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.? These projects and purposes are carried out with an attitude of extending mercy because of the mercy we have received in Christ. [Romans 11:30-31].

The JerUSAlem Connection. Int?l is bold to believe we follow in the distinguished tradition of the ?men of Issachar, who understood the times and knew what Israel should do.? We believe a Christian?s perspective on what God is doing in Israel is a vital key to seeing the big picture of God?s plan and how he is operating in the world today. With this perspective, Christians have a sense of urgency to be used by God as never before. TJCI encourages you to be a part of living out that sense of urgency as a result of having a Biblical perspective on Israel.

Under Dr. Hutchens? leadership, The JerUSAlem Connection Int?l stays current on all the issues regarding the Middle East and Israel on a daily basis and keeps an ongoing update through ?The JerUSAlem Connection Report? online magazine.

Much Ado About Nothing: The Truth Behind Netflix?s API Changes

NetflixBuilding4Last week, Netflix made some changes to its API program and Terms of Use for connecting with it. Since then, there's been some confusion about what the changes actually mean for developers. That confusion was highlighted in a blog post by Goodfil.ms Monday morning, which claimed that Netflix was "quietly smothering its third-party ecosystem." While there are some significant changes, there's nothing that should stop third-party developers from adding values to subscribers looking to access the service through mobile, web, or other connected device applications.

Richard Mourdock Claim That Employers Should Not Have To Cover Cancer Sparks Attacks

Democrats are hammering Indiana GOP Senate candidate Richard Mourdock over his statement that employers should not have to cover cancer in their insurance plans if they don't want to.

Mourdock, the state treasurer, argued in a newspaper interview last week that not only should employers not have to cover health care services that they oppose, such as contraception, but they also should be exempt from paying for anything they do not want to include, based on costs.

?Does that employer have the right to do it?" Mourdock told the News and Tribune, covering southern Indiana. "I would say yes they do if they want to keep their health care costs down but it also means it?s less likely you?re going to want to work here. If that employer wants to get the best employees coming in the door he?s going to offer the best insurance possible.?

On Monday Indiana Democrats have been highlighting the remark, noting that while cancer takes a huge toll in Indiana every year, it's extremely expensive to treat and that 60 percent of all personal bankruptcies are caused by medical bills.

?More than 30,000 Hoosiers are diagnosed with cancer every year," said Indiana's Democratic Party chair, Dan Parker, in a statement.

"Almost 13,000 die. Every one of us has been touched by someone who that has had to suffer an illness that not only threatens lives, but wipes families out financially,? Parker added. ?Richard Mourdock wants to gamble not just Hoosiers? health but our financial security in the name of his TEA Party agenda.?

Mourdock's campaign did not respond to a request to elaborate on his position.

Sly Google wields the knife in Chinese Internet censorship tussle

Google has introduced a new feature for Chinese users that will pull back the curtain on Chinese Internet government censorship.

This week the search engine giant Google kept a polite smile on its face as it stuck its shiv in up to the hilt, introducing a feature to its Chinese site that tells users exactly when the censors have blocked a search word for being too ?sensitive.?

The Chinese government keeps its list of banned search terms secret; Google is now revealing them. But not once did Google Vice President Alan Eustace mention the word ?censorship? in his blog introducing the new feature.

Instead he noted that users in China ?are regularly getting error messages? when they search for ?a particular subset of queries.? He mentioned the word ?jiang? as a case in point ? but did not explain why such a common surname that also means ?river? should be a banned search term.

It?s because ?jiang? is the surname of former president Jiang Zemin, about whom the censors don?t want Chinese citizens to find out much because most of what is written about him on the web concerns his allegedly poor health and his role in succession struggles within the ruling Communist party.

The problem for Google users in China, and Google, is that whenever a user searched for a banned word not only would the search yield only an error message, but the connection to Google would be lost for a minute or so, which is highly inconvenient.

No wonder that Google has only 16 percent of the Chinese search engine market, way behind local competitor Baidu, with 78 percent. Baidu self-censors, so its users have no problem searching ?jiang.? Google has refused to self censor since 2010, when it withdrew from the mainland and based itself in Hong Kong.

Google?s new feature, designed, says Mr. Eustace, to ?help improve the search experience in mainland China,? will warn users when they are searching for a banned word that will cut their connection, allowing them to re-define their searchwords.

Google has identified the ?dangerous? words after analyzing the censors? response to 350,000 of the most popular search queries in China, Eustace explained. And now it is telling its users what those words are, in defiance of the Chinese government?s policy of keeping them secret.

But not too defiant. The tone of Eustace?s blog could not have been smoother nor its references to censorship more roundabout. Google, it seems, does not want to upset Beijing too much.

Perhaps that is because although the US company is pretty much out of the search engine market here, and the censors block or mess with all its products except Gmail, Google still has a big commercial interest in China.

The firm is pushing its Android mobile phone operating system hard, and successfully, with Chinese handset manufacturers. Last month it won Beijing?s approval for its $12.5 billion purchase of Motorola Mobility, a wireless device maker. Under those circumstances, it is probably best not to be too blunt when you are challenging the authorities. A polite smile to mask the knife thrust seems a wise idea.

Ionic liquid improves speed and efficiency of hydrogen-producing catalyst

ScienceDaily (June 16, 2012) ? The design of a nature-inspired material that can make energy-storing hydrogen gas has gone holistic. Usually, tweaking the design of this particular catalyst -- a work in progress for cheaper, better fuel cells -- results in either faster or more energy efficient production but not both. Now, researchers have found a condition that creates hydrogen faster without a loss in efficiency.

And, holistically, it requires the entire system -- the hydrogen-producing catalyst and the liquid environment in which it works -- to overcome the speed-efficiency tradeoff. The results, published online June 8 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, provide insights into making better materials for energy production.

"Our work shows that the liquid medium can improve the catalyst's performance," said chemist John Roberts of the Center for Molecular Electrocatalysis at the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. "It's an important step in the transformation of laboratory results into useable technology."

The results also provide molecular details into how the catalytic material converts electrical energy into the chemical bonds between hydrogen atoms. This information will help the researchers build better catalysts, ones that are both fast and efficient, and made with the common metal nickel instead of expensive platinum.

    A Solution Solution

The work explores a type of dissolvable nickel-based catalyst, which is a material that eggs on chemical reactions. Catalysts that dissolve are easier to study than fixed catalysts, but fixed catalysts are needed for most real-world applications, such as a car's pollution-busting catalytic converter. Studying the catalyst comes first, affixing to a surface comes later.

In their search for a better catalyst to produce hydrogen to feed into fuel cells, the team of PNNL chemists modeled this dissolvable catalyst after a protein called a hydrogenase. Such a protein helps tie two hydrogen atoms together with electrons, storing energy in their chemical bond in the process. They modeled the catalytic center after the protein's important parts and built a chemical scaffold around it.

In previous versions, the catalyst was either efficient but slow, making about a thousand hydrogen molecules per second; or inefficient yet fast -- clocking in at 100,000 molecules per second. (Efficiency is based on how much electricity the catalyst requires.) The previous work didn't get around this pesky relation between speed and efficiency in the catalysts -- it seemed they could have one but not the other.

Hoping to uncouple the two, Roberts and colleagues put the slow catalyst in a medium called an acidic ionic liquid. Ionic liquids are liquid salts and contain molecules or atoms with negative or positive charges mixed together. They are sometimes used in batteries to allow for electrical current between the positive and negative electrodes.

The researchers mixed the catalyst, the ionic liquid, and a drop of water. The catalyst, with the help of the ionic liquid and an electrical current, produced hydrogen molecules, stuffing some of the electrons coming in from the current into the hydrogen's chemical bonds, as expected.

As they continued to add more water, they expected the catalyst to speed up briefly then slow down, as the slow catalyst in their previous solvent did. But that's not what they saw.

"The catalyst lights up like a rocket when you start adding water," said Roberts.

The rate continued to increase as they added more and more water. With the largest amount of water they tested, the catalyst produced up to 53,000 hydrogen molecules per second, almost as fast as their fast and inefficient version.

Importantly, the speedy catalyst stayed just as efficient when it was cranking out hydrogen as when it produced the gas more slowly. Being able to separate the speed from the efficiency means the team might be able to improve both aspects of the catalyst.

    Liquid Protein

The team also wanted to understand how the catalyst worked in its liquid salt environment. The speed of hydrogen production suggested that the catalyst moved electrons around fast. But something also had to be moving protons around fast, because protons are the positively charged hydrogen ions that electrons follow around. Just like on an assembly line, protons move through the catalyst or a protein such as hydrogenase, pick up electrons, form bonds between pairs to make hydrogen, then fall off the catalyst.

Additional tests hinted how this catalyst-ionic liquid set-up works. Roberts suspects the water and the ionic liquid collaborated to mimic parts of the natural hydrogenase protein that shuffled protons through. In these proteins, the chemical scaffold holding the catalytic center also contributes to fast proton movement. The ionic liquid-water mixture may be doing the same thing.

Next, the team will explore the hints they gathered about why the catalyst works so fast in this mixture. They will also need to attach it to a surface. Lastly, this catalyst produces hydrogen gas. To create a fuel technology that converts electrical energy to chemical bonds and back again, they also plan to examine ionic liquids that will help a catalyst take the hydrogen molecule apart.

The Center for Molecular Electrocatalysis at PNNL is one of 46 Energy Frontier Research Centers supported by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science at national laboratories, universities, and other institutions across the country to accelerate basic research related to energy.

Baby robot learns first words from human teacher

AT FIRST it's just noise: a stream of incoherent sounds, burbling away. But, after a few minutes, a fully formed word suddenly emerges: red. Then another: box. In this way, a babbling robot has learned to speak its first real words, just by chatting with a human.

Seeing this developmental leap in a machine may lead to robots that speak in a more natural, human-like way, and help uncover how children first start to make sense of language. Between the ages of 6 and 14 months children move from babbling strings of syllables to uttering actual words. It is a necessary step en route to acquiring full language. Once a few "anchor" words have been established, they provide clues as to where words may start and finish and so it becomes easier for a child to learn to speak.

Inspired by this process, a team led by computer scientist Caroline Lyon at the University of Hertfordshire, UK, programmed their humanoid robot iCub ? called DeeChee ? with almost all the syllables that exist in English ? around 40,000 in total. This allowed it to babble rather like a baby, by arbitrarily stringing syllables together.

The researchers also enlisted 34 people to act as teachers, who were told to treat DeeChee as if it were a child. DeeChee took part in an 8-minute dialogue with each teacher but, between each session, its memory was saved, and then wiped and reset, so that with each teacher, the experiment started anew. At the outset of the dialogue, each of the syllables in DeeChee's lexicon had an identical score.

    Lexicon score

All that started to change once the lesson began. Programmed to take turns listening and then speaking, DeeChee turned the teacher's speech into syllables, totting up the number of instances of each one. It then used this information to update the scores in its own lexicon, giving extra points to syllables the teacher had used.

When it next spoke, it would be more likely to repeat the syllables the teacher had uttered because these now had higher scores.

Lyon says this is reminiscent of human infants. "When they hear frequent sounds, they become sensitive to them," says Lyon. "They prefer what's familiar."

This learning by imitation was then reinforced, as teachers made encouraging comments when DeeChee spoke a recognisable word. DeeChee was programmed to detect these comments and give extra points to the syllables that preceded the teacher's approval. Inevitably some nonsense syllables would get extra points too. But as this process was repeated, only those syllables that made up words would keep showing up in strings that gained approval.

Though the robot was still uttering nonsense streams of syllables, towards the end of the 8 minutes, real words kept popping up more often than if DeeChee were still selecting syllables at random.

That words can emerge from babble using a statistical learning process not specific to language demonstrates that this stage of language acquisition does not require hard-wired grammar faculties, says Lyon.

Paul Vogt, a cognitive scientist at Tilburg University in the Netherlands is impressed: "It's a very interesting first step towards having robots that can help us study language acquisition."

Right now, DeeChee's speech is a far cry from full-blown language, but starting with babbling could be the best way to create robots that speak naturally. "If you want the robot to work with natural speech, then you might need to teach it from the very beginning," says Lyon.

    Journal reference:PLoS One, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0038236

    Only the ones that matter

Not all words are created equal. When Caroline Lyon's team at the University of Hertfordshire, UK, taught a robot rudimentary speech, it favoured some types of words over others. Shapes and colours ? including red, green, heart, square, box ? appeared much more often than "the" or "and". Lyon says "and" or "the" are uttered very frequently but are sometimes squashed together with another word, making it hard to make them out. Salient words like "red" or "green" tend to be pronounced the same way no matter where in a sentence they appear. It's possible that this difference helps children learn, as these words have higher "information value" at a young age, suggests Lyon's team.

    Father's Day: A Pop-Culture Gift Guide

To help you show your appreciation for dad, MTV News compiles a list of must-have items.
    By James Montgomery

"Game of Thrones" season one on Blu-ray
    Photo:

Provided your dad didn't go out for cigarettes and never came back, you'll be celebrating him and all his paternal excellence on Sunday, which — in case you forgot — just so happens to be the 102nd (or so) Father's Day.

And while we here at MTV News would like to point out that you should probably honor your father every day (after all, who else can teach you about the infield fly rule, the double Windsor knot and the rhythm method?), we realize that, more often than not, dad is just the guy you roll your eyes at from the backseat of the car. So perhaps this is the year you finally do him right, with a totally sweet Father's Day gift.

Which is where we come in: Using the full force of the MTV News brain trust, we've compiled a list of gifts sure to make his Father's Day special. From movies and video games to ultra-cool accessories and totally killer rock records, these are the must-haves for any dad.

Because he's worth it. And also because he probably doesn't want another tie.

For the dad still stuck in the 1980s: How about a pair of tickets to "Rock of Ages," the film that captures the rock and roll excesses of the Reagan era in all their full-throttled, feathered-hair glory? Sure, it might be super-embarrassing to sit next to him as he plays air guitar to Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar on Me," but imagine how he feels when you make him drop you off a block and a half away from the mall. You're even.

For the dad who's a super-nerd ... and really into beheadings: Get him a Blu-ray copy of the first season of "Game of Thrones," the bloody-great HBO show that redefines sheer nerdery as we know it. "Thrones" has truly got something for every dad. Machiavellian political dealings, gripping drama and dripping combat scenes — it's all there for the viewing. And shoot, even if he's not into swords and sorcery, there's plenty of nudity. This is what we in the business refer to as a "win/win."

For the dad who fancies himself an anti-hero: Pick up "Max Payne 3," the latest installment of Rockstar Games' truly excellent shooter series. Set eight years after the last game, it finds Max overweight and overwrought, popping pills and dealing with a serious late-life crisis. (Just like your dad!) Of course, it's not all drama; in fact, the third "Payne" game brings back the much-saluted "bullet-time" technology, which slows down the shootouts and maximizes the cinematic gore. As an added bonus, the folks at Rockstar also tout the fact that the killing is more realistic than ever this time out. Plenty of bad guys to smoke, plenty of brooding to be done: It's the kind of feel-good game you and your dad can play together. Ah, memories.

For the dad who wants the latest in shut-in couture: Get him one of the limited-edition Supreme T-shirts designed by noted oddball auteur (and illustrator) Daniel Johnston. Filled with illustrations of cross-bearing Captain Americas, boxing aliens and, uh, more Captain Americas, they're guaranteed to make dad the hit of his next office mixer — and to totally freak out all of his co-workers, too.

For the dad who's totally awesome: Download him a copy of Japandroids' Celebration Rock, the year's most kick-ass rock record. Full of fist-pumping riffs and shout-worthy sing-alongs, it'll take him back to the good old days, when rock was played fast and loud and you could get away with giving songs titles like "Fire's Highway." He'll probably take off his shirt and crack open a cold one, but deal with it. Dad's gotta cut loose somehow.

For the skater dad: Head out to Macy's and pick him out something from Lil Wayne's new Trukfit line, a collection of colorful hats and tees with just enough swag for the skate park. And as if some Weezy association isn't enough to make your pops super cool, consider this: The clothing line's name is an acronym for "The Reason U Kill for It," which automatically makes him the hardest dad on the block.

Guy on jet pack catches glimpses of perfecto

You knew this was not going to be an ordinary day when you saw Matt Cain taking early swings at AT&T Park ? with a golf club. He parked a Titleist in McCovey Cove from home plate ? estimated distance 310 yards ? and then proceeded to club Astros hitters in similar fashion for the first perfect game in Giants franchise history. That dates to when they broke into the National League as the New York Gothams in 1883, by the way. Honest John Clapp and Tip O?Neill, this one was for you.

Speaking of McCovey Cove, one fan made like James Bond and took periodic peeks at the game above the outfield wall with some kind of a water-powered jet pack.

    Video here.

Seems that Jet Pack Guy is already an internet meme. Ha.

    source:

    It?s called a Jetovator, apparently.

What was even more amazing to me than the perfect game was the fact that the Giants had 15 hits and 10 runs, with three homers. That?s easily a month?s worth of offense for this team.

Oh, and bite me, East Coast Bias:

But here?s another great thing about the perfect game: plenty of shots of Cain?s wife, Chelsea.

Air Force cites progress on F-22 oxygen mystery

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Air Force believes it is getting much closer to pinpointing the reason why pilots of its prized F-22 stealth fighters sometimes suffer an oxygen deficit during flight, a senior general said Thursday.

The problem prompted the Air Force to ground the aircraft for a period in 2011, and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta last month ordered new flight restrictions after CBS' "60 Minutes" program aired interviews with F-22 pilots who complained about the oxygen problem.

Maj. Gen. Charles Lyon, who is managing the Air Force's effort to resolve the mysterious problem, said in an Associated Press interview that it is likely that the pilots' symptoms are caused by previously unknown restrictions on their breathing.

"We're not ready to declare victory yet," he said, but this is the first time the Air Force has narrowed down the likely cause. Lyon said he also is close to ruling out another theory: That contaminants were getting into the pilot's lungs via the oxygen delivery system that is connected by hose to their flight helmets.

Lyon said he is satisfied, after extensive testing, that no harmful contaminants are moving through the oxygen system. He is the director of operations for Air Force Combat Command and has been leading the F-22 work since January.

Lyon said the root of the problem, which has caused some F-22 pilots to feel dizzy and experience other symptoms of hypoxia, or oxygen deprivation, may turn out to be linked to two issues:

?Improper functioning of the pilots' pressure, or G-force, vest. Lyon said that, unknown to the pilots, the vest's bladder has been filling with air at times when it should not. That has made it harder for the pilots to breath. The Air Force last Friday stopped using the vests and is going to modify them before returning them to use in the F-22, Lyon said. In the meantime the Air Force has lowered the maximum altitude the F-22 will fly, since the vests are intended to protect pilots' lungs in the event of a sudden loss of cockpit air pressure at high altitudes.

?The hose and hose connectors that are part of the pilot's oxygen delivery system have been leaking slightly, further restricting the amount of oxygen getting to the pilot's lungs.

Lyon said additional testing will be done before the Air Force can be certain that these restrictions are the root of the problem.

The Air Force has come under fire from some in Congress for not taking quicker action to fix the problem. Two leading critics, Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., and Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., told reporters Thursday they believe the Air Force needs to be more open with the public about the issue.

Warner and Kinzinger also said that information they received from the Air Force this week indicates that the oxygen-deficit problem is greater than the Air Force had previously believed.

In the AP interview, Lyon acknowledged that there had been a higher rate of hypoxia-like incidents among F-22 pilots since the plane was returned to flight in September than in years past. He said there were 11 such incidents from September to March 8. But since then, over a period in which the F-22 has flown about 6,000 hours, there have been none, Lyon said.

"The trend line is very positive," the general said.

Lyon said he briefed senior Pentagon officials and congressional staff members this week, including the staffs of Warner and Kinzinger, on all aspects of his work to solve the F-22 problem.

The F-22, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, is the Air Force's most-prized stealth fighter. It was built to evade radar and is capable of flying at faster-than-sound speeds without using afterburners.

The 170-jet fleet is stationed at six U.S. bases: Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska: Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii; Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va.; Nellis Air Force Base, Nev.; Holloman Air Force Base, N.M.; and Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla.

F-22 pilots are trained at Tyndall. Flight testing is at Edwards Air force Base, Calif., and operational testing and tactics development is performed at Nellis.
