Guatemalan mayor shot to death in barber shop

Gunmen in Guatemala have killed the mayor of the town of Jutiapa, in the eastern part of the Central American country.

The killing came the same day that President Otto Perez Molina said there has been "a historic decline" in Guatemala's violence during the first year of his administration. He said during his state-of-the-nation address that homicides have decreased about 10 percent.

Authorities in Jutiapa say Mayor Carlos Castillo Medrano was shot to death at a barber shop Monday.

The victim's brother is Manuel de Jesus Castillo, a former congressman who has been accused of drug gang ties. He is serving a prison sentence in the 2007 slayings of the three El Salvador representatives to the Guatemala-based Central American Parliament.
